Toxic Holocaust has always been a thrash favourite amongst fans. We have received the privilege of tapping into the creative mind of Joel Grind and the amazing albums he has produced over the years of his career. This year, he has brought "Chemistry of Consciousness" to the table and, may I say, it's a fantastic instalment. There's only one reason for this: this album has surpassed the band's most successful, and popular, release "An Overdose of Death" in sound, speed and creative edge.

From beginning to end, the sound has been visceral and I'm saying that in the best way possible. Grind's harsh vocals mixed with Slayer-influenced guitar riffs make the album all worthwhile and ten times more powerful than previous albums. When listening to "Overdose," we thought we got the best of Toxic Holocaust because it was powerful, raw and was doing well in the riff department. The band didn't fuck around with that album in the slightest, they wanted it to be impressive. Now, with this release, it seems as if though they felt the need to push themselves further and achieve the impossible: making an album that's better than the legendary "An Overdose of Death." They didn't disappoint there. The riffs are faster, the drums and bass synch well with Grind's musical contributions and are evenly proportioned. Another thing is that the riffs are far more technical, if anything they bring Slayer's "Reign in Blood" to mind. An example of this would be the songs titled, "Salvation is Waiting" and "Awaken the Serpent."

This instalment is basically a new and improved version of "Overdose," everything has kicked up a notch in speed, everything from the instruments to the quality is heavier and the sound is crystal clear. There were times where we would often feel like the music wasn't loud enough on albums such as "Hell on Earth" because this was around the time when Toxic Holocaust was fairly new to the scene. This album has proved that the band has made a name for themselves and are capable of producing a high quality and powerful album such as this one. From beginning to end the album never ceases to amaze, it remains the same in terms of consistency and there was never a moment where the music got repetitive. Instead there's a wide variety of songs, some slower than others but all are heavy as fuck and the riffs are tasty as they are delightful and grim.

The question remains: why is this album of the year? Not only has the band been able to stick to their roots while making some variational changes but they also surpassed their most popular and successful album (I think you know by now what it's called). If I has to pick a proper contender for this instalment it would be on par with Children of Bodom's "Halo of Blood," another powerful and consistent album. This album is really good and is totally recommended. If you are a fan of some good thrash metal and tasty riffage, or if you're a die hard Toxic Holocaust fan then you should pick this up immediately, no questions asked. This is, by far, album of the year.
